National Museum Niš

Antiquity

There are numerous objects originating from the territory of Niš and its surroundings within the Rome and Byzantium Collections. They bear witness to the daily life, economy, art, architecture, cult and religion of the people who lived in this area in the period from the 1st to the 6th century.

Several masterpieces of ancient art come from the area of Niš: a bronze portrait of Constantine the Great, silver plates made on the occasion of Licinius’ decennial, a bronze portrait of Empress Theodora, a porphyry portrait of a diarch, a bronze statuette of Jupiter on a throne and a bronze fence with herms. The most representative artifacts from the ancient collection are displayed in a permanent archaeological exhibition.
